Originally three tales told from a male first-person perspective A man saved from death and left with a strange longing he can't articulate; A man trying to retrieve evidence of his foolish past and left in a deadly position; a man lost in a drab life offered a lifeline when he rediscovers an old habit ; and one short story that grew and is now the opening of a novel - Eddie has made a new life for himself after the arrival of the Zombie Apocalypse, but when Jackie literally runs into him one day, she brings some bad news. The Kingdom of Denby is growing, and is about to over-run his safe haven. Updated in 2017 to add three more short stories.

Troubled Souls edition by Damian Trasler Literature Fiction eBooks

Damian Trasler's latest short story compilation is a bit of a strange mixture. First you have three dark and twisted tails and then you have a more light hearted take on the zombie apocalypse sub-genre. Which is apparently going to become a full novel by next year.

It's not that any of the component parts are bad (I'll go into each of them more in a moment), it's just that the last really doesn't belong with the first three. And it's possible that it even detracts from the impact of the earlier tales. So looking at the compilation as a whole, I think it doesn't quite hang together. On the other hand I'd really have to recommend reading each of these stories. So...

*Smoke:* I've never been a smoker. I have quite literally never smoked a cigarette in my life. And I've never had a desire to. So imagine how hard it would be to draw me in to a character who aches for the taste and smell of a cigarette. And yet somehow that happened. It's probably the closest I've ever come to understanding that addiction. It's a fascinating and yet creepy story.

*Rescue Me:* More delving into disturbing psychology. What effect might having your life saved have on you? How might it warp your personality and your future desires?

*The Devil Woman and my box:* Stupidity and ego are a dangerous combination as the narrator of this story finds out to his cost.

Each of these short stories is effective psychological horror, efficiently told. The story isn't drawn out, the endings aren't belabored. They're creepy but not in a traditional horror way. All three are excellent and well worth reading.

*Eddie and the Kingdom of Denby / Jackie's Story:* This is a lighter tone that is more reminiscent of the other work I've read by this particular author. It takes a practical view of the Zombie apocalypse and how an reasonably competent loner might go about surviving. And then it asks you what he might do when another part of the remaining society begins to encroach.

This one really isn't a stand alone story. As the author indicates up front, it started out that way and grew. I'm really looking forward to reading the full book once it's done because Eddie is an entertaining point of view character. Both practical and self-effacing. Meanwhile Jackie has a darker past and maybe at first she seems like the damsel in distress, but there's more going on there.

So each of these stories is worth reading. And if you were smart and took my advice before (you should always take my advice) you'd have picked this book up when it was free on Amazon. Because I knew it would be worth reading. If not, well I still think it's a bargain and you should just go ahead and buy it.

But... I also have to acknowledge that I think if there had been one or two more stories in the style of the first three in here, this compilation would have knocked it out the park.

Troubled Souls edition by Damian Trasler Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Short stories need intriguing plot lines and these deliver. I wanted more at th end of each one.

But the teaser for Damian's novel about the zombie apocalypse really left me wanting more.
What a great way to spend an afternoon! Pick this up, it's more than worth the price. These three stories are each a glimpse into moments of despair, redemption, or utter foolishness for three regular guys. And as a bonus, the book includes the opening chapters of a yet-to-be released novel. I'll be sure to pick that one up when it's out; I want to know what happens next.
First time I've read anything by this author so I didn't know what to expect. I really enjoyed the three short stories and felt like Trasler did a good job of finding a unique angle for each of them. "Rescue Me" is such a cool concept and it was my favorite of the short stories! What happens after you attempt to end your life but some do-gooder swoops in to save you? I'm not going to go into details here but the ending was superb.

I enjoyed the opening of his novel, Eddie and the Kingdom. It has a much different feel than the other stories so I really don't think it fits in here but it did prompt me to just now purchase that novel so I guess the author knew what he was doing.

There were at least a few instances of missing words (e.g "...and I can do THAT math in heartbeat." <--- missing the word "a" before heartbeat). It drives me nuts because it momentarily rips me out of the story...and these are good stories!

I would have liked if there were more "troubled souls" stories here. Three short tales wasn't enough. Just when I was really getting in a groove with this it was done and I felt like it should have been more. I'm rating this 3 stars but I wish I could give it 3.5.

All in all, I enjoyed Troubled Souls and look forward to digging into Eddie and the Kingdom.
Trasler's Troubled Souls is a collection of short stories from a male protagonist's point of view. These short stories are darker than his sci-fi stories in Science Fiction Shorts. In addition to the other short stories in Troubled Souls you get a sample of Eddie and the Kingdom - which I didn't read since I've already bought the book.

Troubled Souls is a great collection of short stories that are easy to read. You can either read them one at a time or all together, which is what I did. The endings aren't what you'd expect, hell the beginnings aren't either. The themes are surprising and refreshing in their darkness. There's probably at least one story theme you can identify with.

Smoke is about a man saved by a bad habit.

Rescue Me is about a person denied the ending of their life and being pissed about it.

The Devil Woman and a box is about a fool and what he looses over a box.

Outrage of an Angel is about a mortal "angle" who doesn't get credit where credit is due.

She Broke Your Throne is about the death of a tired hero...or is it a staged death?

Brian, Destroyer of a City is about the godly power of a writer and his frustration.
