Ok, I consider myself anxious. And there was clearly strategic information in this book for me. However my perceived condition is on a magnitude less then what appears to be the target audience of this book. I say bravo to those that have severe panic and debilitating anxiety that could go on to travel. I do recommend this book, but it was not intended for me.

I am definitely the type of person who sits on my couch and reads about the traveling the world. At some point I really hope I gain the courage to actually see all the places I want to see.

This book not only let me know that I am not alone, it also informed me of all the different things that can come up on a trip and how to set my expectations. The author really touches base on every type of anxiety and helps by giving examples on how to address them.

I hope to one day be as amazing and wonderful as this author and to conquer the world one country at a time.

WELL worth the read!
This is a GREAT book; so helpful, and incredibly thorough. I am an anxious person most of the time, and even when not traveling, I would use these techniques, particularly with respect to food allergies and hay fever. This information can be critical for some people. Plus, the discussion about how people are different in different climates could really make me choose my destination based quite a lot on just that! Also, I loved what the author said in Chapter 3 about asking for help from airline personnel; I tend to try to do it all myself, so it’s nice to have a reminder that I don’t always have to. And the tips on not overcompensating during acclimatization to a different climate, along with the link to the climate guides all over the world, are very useful. Just an all-around, very thorough and helpful book!
Rita writes from personal experience, having traveled to more than 30 countries in the past few years. The information in this book is gleaned from her experiences traveling and facing the situations discussed in the book. This is useful not only to the anxious traveler, but to any traveler wanting to be aware of with what a fellow traveler may be dealing, be it one with any anxiety issue or not. Rita has worked closely with her support structure (family, friends, medical practitioners) to address these issues when traveling. And she has grown from these experiences. The Anxious Traveler is an easy read, made so by Rita's easy, personal writing style. This highly informative book is a must read not only for those dealing with anxieties, but tour guides and travel companions as well.
After listening to Rita describe her book on the news I decided to give it a read. I have a brother who deals with anxiety issues and I thought this book woukd give me additional insight to what he's going through.
I found that not only was the book well structured and written very nicely, but also the materials were complete and researched well. It really seems like a roadmap to success!
I didn't know that psychiatric problems are among the top reasons why peopke cut trios/plans short. Rita talks about how travel can actually be a form of therapyif you know how to allow it. She talks about what to anticipate and how to prepare to overcome barriers. She goes into the details of psychiatric conditions and answers many of the questions people may have. A chapter i really enjoyed was chapter 3 - The unique Physical and Emotional Challenges of Travel, which touches on things you wouldn't consider such as caffeine and nicotine consumption.
Overall a great book. Two thumbs up!

I love to travel
Just what I needed while planning an extended trip. If you suffer from anxiety, it will be a great help to you, too.
I'm a true `homebody,' and I have to fly and travel for my job - suffice to say, being away from home is not my thing. I can't sleep on a plane, and the thought of a new hotel room every night makes me dread my out-of-town meetings. So I love this book...it's a well-written resource from someone who has actually traveled and experienced environments and situations that can aggravate any traveler. Reading this book has given me insight into the stress and fear I experience, and I have better perspective on future work travels. Kudos to the author!
